The music industry is a fickle, oftentimes cruel world. It’s not at all uncommon for artists oozing with both talent and potential to suddenly disappear, never to be heard from again. While some manage to escape the black hole of negligence, others aren’t quite so lucky. Washington Township, New Jersey’s I Call Fives need not worry, at least if their new EP, Someone That’s Not You, should serve as any able indication. Featuring four high-powered, hook-laden tracks, this pop-punk powerhouse have put their best foot forward, setting their sights on not only a more expansive audience but also the recognition they irrefutably deserve.
The EP kicks into gear with the title track, “Someone That’s Not You,” and almost immediately, a slight change in direction is evident. Fans of the band’s older material might notice an added layer of grittiness, culminating in portions of screamed background vocals, which work wonders in giving the quintet’s trademark sound more depth. Yet, despite this added coarseness, rest assured the hooks are as sugary and irresistible as ever. On “Backup Plan,” the EP’s second offering, vocalist Jeff Todd shows off his dynamic, glossy vocals, particularly in the track’s soaring chorus, his tone seemingly tailor-made for the genre.
The second half of the EP opens with “Lakeview,” a leisurely-paced ballad on which the band swaps adrenaline for acoustic guitars and sing-along melodies. Guitarists Chris Mclelland and Mike Joffe harmonize together beautifully, providing a soothing, almost paradisiacal backdrop, a welcome change of pace. As the number comes to a close, familiarity shows its face, as the opening riff of Third Eye Blind’s smash hit “How’s It Going To Be” leaves its footprint. Truthfully, while the band has done little to differentiate the cover from its source material, Todd channels Third Eye Blind frontman Stephen Jenkins so masterfully, the song is as appealing and terrific as ever.
